“SUNSHINE” STATE IN BRIEF
Ondo State, globally referred to as the “Sunshine State” was created from the defunct Western Region on 3rd February, 1976. It originally included what is now Ekiti State, which was split off in 1996 by Late General Sani Abacha.
Ondo State occupies a land area of about 15,000 Square Kilometers with a Population of 3,441,924 people according to 2006 Census.
The State has Eighteen (18) Local Government areas, with Akure as the Capital City as well as the Largest settlement.
People and Culture
The State is predominantly occupied by the Yorubas who speak various dialects of the language such as Akoko, Akure, Apoi, Idanre, Ijaw, Ikale, Ondo and the Owo.
Popular Cultural Festivals within the State includes:
*Igogo Festival in Owo.
*Mare Festival in Idanre
*Ulefunta Festival in Akure.
Ondo State which is indeed a microcosm of the Nigerian Nation, is blessed with resourceful and hospitable people. Her crop of educated elite has led to its being classified as one of the most educationally advanced State in Nigeria. One wouldn’t wonder why the State is also referred to as “A Place of Pride”(Ibi Amuyangan) reading about people who have excelled and have recorded outstanding success in their chosen career both dead and living. The people of Ondo State are mostly subsistence farmers, fishermen, traders and civil servants who believe in hard work hence the adoption of the popular Yoruba maxim “Ise l’ogun Ise” (Hard work is the antidote for Poverty).

Ondo State is located in the South Western Geo-Political Zone of Nigeria. It has three (3) Senatorial Districts and Nine (9) Federal Constituencies.
It has Eighteen (18) Local Government and Two Hundred and Three (203) Political Wards.
The Sunshine State shares common boundaries with other States of the Federation.
In the North with Kogi State, Ekiti State. The State has boundaries in the west with Osun State, Ogun State and Lagos State along the Coast line. It also shares boundary with Edo State.
